It also explains why I scoff at the goofiness of so many spaghetti Westerns and am bored by their unrealistic, un-captivating story lines.

With all that said, the film is entertaining and if you are looking for some good action check it out.

It's far more engrossing than almost any war movie, including those with budgets many times larger.

Worth the Watch .

" Some gripping action and battle scenes filmed on magnificent locations in southern Utah desert.

The supporting cast is equally impressive: beautiful Bibi Andersson is Ellen, the wife of bigoted trader Willard Grange (Dennis Weaver), who has her own compelling subplot: she'd once been kidnapped by Apaches, and bore one of the tribe a son, to whom she tries to return, especially as Willard and other townspeople insist on giving her the cold shoulder.

Although the first and last acts are strong and compelling, the second act is weak and uninteresting despite the fact that it has lots of Cavalry v.

The cinematography is excellent and the stunning vistas of the old west are on grand display.

This violent Western and hard on racial themes is full of noisy action, thrills , chills and results to be quite entertaining.

7 of 10, for this unconventional western, entertaining.

Wheeler, and given a nicely rousing score by Neal Hefti.

With it's staunch, gripping, pulse pounding action, tight camera angles, cast iron leads and an intense plot, I highly recommend DUEL AT DIABLO to all western fans.

Strong portrayals by Bibi Andersson, as Ellen Grange, and James Gardner work here with skillful director Ralph Nelson to create a well acted, beautifully photographed, entertaining Western, even though some mannered performances by other actors as such Sidney Poitier distract from the natural feel Andersson and Gardner bring to the effort.

The first & more watchable of 2 intense Westerns from Ralph Nelson, "Diablo" is one of the starkest examples of the tough, realistic Westerns that became popular in the late 1950s.

Tense, gripping Western .

Conventional but Entertaining Western .

DUEL AT DIABLO has a bitterness of mood, but is generally exciting and entertaining.

Both battles were impressively riotous and blistered with adrenaline.

Beautifully filmed on Utah locations, thus must have been stunning on the big screen.

It's got several strands of sub-plots going but spends most of its time featuring some action packed shootouts that don't leave much time for character development among the cast.

Horse trader Toller is also dragged along to finish breaking the horses he sold to the fort.

I recalled the exciting cavalry charges etc. and I even remembered the opening refrain of the strange musical score.

Intense Western, Not for the Squeamish .

James Garner is a good lead in this rousing Cavalry v.

Dated, but a well handled, compelling and tough as nails western, which finally shines through.

In spite of this minor quibble,"duel at Diablo" is an exciting western ,with a lot of subplots and even an unexpected twist (which makes sense),notably concerning Garner's late wife ;violence and cruelty (Indian tortures) are present and predict the final slaughter in the 1971 effort.

Enjoyable enough western that covers the weak subtext with a good cast .

And I never thought it would happen, but by about the twentieth skirmish across the desert, I actually got a little bored with all the repetitive stunts and endless shooting.

This may not qualify as a classic, but I definitely think its a great action flick, and a breath of western fresh air with intriguing insights into race, warfare, culture, and the winning of the west.

During many of the fight scenes (for instance) all of the hats stay on even though they are infighting in intense battle.

An action-packed exciting western .
