The performances were fine, the story was compelling and tense, the budget was inadequate, and the "based on" factor used EXTREME liberties with the actual mythos surrounding the Bell Witch.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

You'd have to be extremely creative to make something from that genre be fresh, new and compelling.

If you wanna finally see a movie that makes sense, is suspenseful and has a great cast go see this film.

I didn't think of it as one of the greatest pictures out there, but it was entertaining and totally worth the money!

This movie allows you to escape reality for a while by entertaining you, while still keeping a creepy edge and it doesn't over power you with guts and gore.

Don't waste your time.

Basically the film was a confusing mess and had I not read the book would have had no idea what was going on.

This movie is terrible, the plot stinks, the writing stink, it's repetitive, and just basically made no sense to me.

Repetitive is definitely the way to describe this film and its attempt to create an ending which leaves it audience thinking, fails miserably and instead bewilders the viewer.

This was the worst movie I've seen all year.

Why have they taken so long to come out with this story, it is fascinating and terrifying.

The slow scenes are empty and the fast scenes are packed.

An American Haunting was very scary and suspenseful...

psychologically engaging .

This movie was probably the worst movie I have ever paid money to see.

It's very intense and great.

Ingram's novel into a more intriguing and thought provoking treatment.

The movie had me had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

I thought the story held up well and despite other comments saying that it was confusing, I didn't find it so at all.

So I can't give this movie a 1 because it was terribly entertaining in just that it was so...

Half the critics were addressed to the lack of respect shown for the "facts" of the original story (which can be blamed on the novel) and the other half to the relentless insistence of the haunting itself which can either bore the viewer or unsettle him until the film's apparent lack of structure is finally vindicated by the point it is trying to make, which is an important one, in my humble opinion.

not the fact that it wasn't scary or not much happening i just didn't find myself interested in the movie whatsoever, so i found it a boring watch.

On top of which, each scene being nearly the exact same scene prior had me yawning towards the end of the movie and whispering jokes to my friend sitting next to me.

slightly entertaining .

It's a touching drama and a riveting psychological thriller.

The pace of the movie is overly slow and tedious.

Just because the plot may be confusing doesn't mean it wasn't a good movie.

In short: Save your money, or march your butt back to the theater and demand a refund.

Besides entertaining you, An American Haunting will serve as a decent lesson in the devices that make good horror.

After introducing the characters and establishing the basic premise, the film lapses into a succession of repetitive and not-in-the-slightest-bit-scary scenes in which Betsy is abused both physically and mentally by the 'ghost'.

Once this happens, the confusion begins for me.

The film I saw was in the first place very very boring.

They actually looked terrified, even though I was sitting behind my computer, my jaw agape, staring at the screen in extreme boredom.

) What it lacks, unfortunately, is much in the way of a compelling story.

I was laughing out loud at this part and flabbergasted that the spirit dragged her around a little and then did it again.

While some parts were loud perhaps a bit bombastic, I loved watching this gripping period piece.

Some stupid cliché loud noises, sounds and even some nonsense scenes were added in an effort to make some scenes scary, it just made them worse.

Donald Sutherland was okay, a little dull and he also didn't seem to be trying.

If you are looking for an entertaining horror movie, and enjoyed films such as 'The Others' or 'The Sixth Sense', this is definitely worth your time for a Friday-Night-Rental choice.

Mediocre and mundane telling of supposedly true events.

I also felt that the ending was a big cliché in the mother seeing "betsy's witch" and finally realizing that her daughter was in the same situation (maybe she should get off the bottle???

although there were some plot holes or loose ends, it was still enjoyable and moving.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

And twists become pointless when you realise how at least and hour and a half of the movie is there *purely* to set it up.

" The people leaving the F's need to go do something with them selves because they either haven't seen it, or were expecting a fast paced Horror Thriller.

The repetitiveness of the story gets a bit tedious, one of those movies where you get frustrated by the stupidity of the characters, which makes the whole thing unbelievable, which is a missed opportunity as it is supposed to be based on a true story.

I did find the violent scenes to be a bit cheesy and the flashbacks were constantly confusing us.

But I was dumb, and bored, at the same time.

Don't waste your money.

I thought any film with Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland in it has got to be worth watching.

There a many unexpected twists and turns to keep you well engrossed in the film.

It is entertaining and you should go see it.

Talk about a yawn.

Good stuff and unexpected.

I feel like the majority of "scary" movies rely too much on the "boo" factor and are somewhat predictable or have some silly monster that is just not believable.

The film's gimmicks are old and cliché, about on par with a Lifetime Original Movie with Shannon Doherty and Keanu Reeves, if that.

The best thing about it is the unexpected ending, even though here in Germany they killed it by revealing the ending already in the title.

I think some of you are slow...

It was too predictable and in the end disappointing in it's mundane implications.

Deserves a proper re-filming of this most compelling story.

Chilling and thrilling from beginning to ending .

Overall it was an entertaining film and had some good jumps and creepy scenes.

Slow.

Fascinating .

Unexpected elements such as the black wolf are necessary to keep a movie original and unpredictable.

Save your money folks, because it is NOT going to spook you out of your seat.

I was mad when I left the theater.

How very contrived.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Anyway, if you like 'horror' without all the blood, gore, real suspense, psychological chills, or real monsters, and just prefer to see a girl get dragged around by an unseen force, this flick's for you.

Definitely a movie I suggest to see with friends when bored to death.

Scary and suspenseful....

However the film is boring and repetitive.

Historically entertaining.

Starting with a great script and a superb storyline, a plot that develops the way plots should develop to keep a story going and exciting.

This movie was intense and held my attention throughout so much that I forgot to eat my popcorn.

She expressed such horror and torment and was treated with such physical rigor that I was on the edge of my seat wondering how a child could've managed.

Some were mad because it didn't follow the true story perfectly, but it was closer than most "true" horror stores such as Amityville horror; and the actual story would make a pretty boring and confusing movie if told accurately.

I saw it with three friends and we were all on the edge of our seats.

Every time a character starts to develop, he/she become uninteresting instantly due to script, or something, maybe the true ghost of this movie?

First of all, I didn't know the history of this ghost story until afterwards so I wasn't expecting anything, and I must say that I enjoyed it, though I can't admit to being scared.

Historical, chilling, thrilling and haunting.

The film-makers managed to at least align a few of the truths in this often pretentious piece of fiction work.

Every single little camera move is accompanied by a loud sound effect and it grows tedious before the first act is even over.

Every cliché of the horror genre is employed – scratching, bumping, levitation, flaring and 'mysteriously' snuffed candles, sinister childish whispers…need I go on?

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

He is seen stuffing the shirt he wore during the act into the bag, but his daughter is shown lying in bed with her nightgown bloodied over her private area and it looks as though he's ready to leave the room and didn't put the nightgown in the bag.

It was just embarrassingly bad, almost as bad as Lady in the Water—brash, loud, overproduced, clueless actors, pointless, gratuitous, cliché, cheap scares, amateurish and overused point-of—view shots, unintentional slapstick, etc. There were such well-known scenes as Sleepless Teenage Girl Eavesdropping on Her Parents' Very Serious-Sounding and Grown-Up Argument.

Unfortunately 'American Haunting' isn't much scarier than Monster's Inc. It does start with promise, but it becomes tiresome very quickly, the effects of the ghost in the house are on screen for most of the film and simply become boring and over used, the main downfall for me though, was the lack of fear in the characters; none of them seem to portray the terror to make the events believable.

i am still scratching my head with so much confusion.

I enjoyed the adrenaline romp of scares this film delivered.

I'm not in the habit of dishing out the lowest possible score to movies I review on IMDb, but this tedious tale of malevolent spirits is an exceptionally bad film that truly deserves a roasting.

Donald Sutherland looks bored through half of the film.

Now that he was given the chance to do things his way, he created a truly fascinating and horrifying vision of that particular haunting.

Having recently seen Emily Rose, I would have to say that this film was much better and would highly recommend it.

a thrilling psychological roller-coaster .

Then comes a whole bunch of very confusing turns of events where everybody has nightmares and gets attacked by a ghost.

An American Haunting was very scary and suspenseful...

It has an unexpected ending too.

confusing and not scary .

visually entertaining...

An American Haunting was pretty entertaining and I liked the way Courtney Solomon intertwined the two main themes of the film.

If I weren't there taking my brother out for his birthday, I would've walked out halfway through.

pointless .

look, the girl is being dragged again, maybe the ghost just thinks she's hot or something..?" The ending of the film was unfulfilling given the overblown plot, not to mention absolutely no character development involved.

The writing and directing were also pretty weak, the dialogue was cheesy and very cliché.

But overall, it was an enjoyable theatre-going experience.

" You'll be sitting through every tension-filled scene with enough anticipation (read: fright) to either keep you on the edge of your seat or wrapped up in the fetal position in it.

Do your self a favour, save your money for another film – this ones not worth your time or money.

Boring .

Unexpected .

Honest, stunning, superbly acted.

Its thrilling, will keep you at the edge of your seat, and definitely one of the most brilliant films announced for 2006.

The movie as a whole is pretty boring.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

All in all very disappointing, repetitive, lacking of originality and way too many dreams by the characters, seldom did much of the action in this film actual happen to the characters outside of a dream sequence.

What really stood out was Rachel Hurd-Wood's acting, just absolutely brilliant and stunning, on par with her performance from Peter Pan, she was just so convincing in this movie that quite a few people in the theater cried.

The scenes set in the present day were completely pointless.

I forget which) & while I found it to be an excellent ghost story, with exceptional acting, eerie settings, mood music, good SFX, & a plot that kept you on edge, I absolutely hated the contrived, "modern" ending.

A Predictable Semi-fiction .

I was invited to a pre screening of this movie and walked out of it with a really bad taste in mouth.

Why have they taken so long to come out with this story, it is fascinating and terrifying.

The Haunting no message.

Betsy Bell (Rachel Hurd-Wood), the youngest daughter is repeatedly targeted by the spirit; she is dragged by her hair, lifted off the floor, and slapped.

Save your money, don't rent this film.

The only feeling that I felt with any kind of intensity was boredom!

HAUNTING 2005 (DONALD SUTHERLAND, SISSY SPACEK) DIRECTED BY: COURTNEY SOLOMON ~ THE RUNDOWN: An extremely boring movie in which a toned-down 'Exorcist' scene gets repeated over and over again.

the same situations of attack gets repeated many time with similar scenes of camera swooning from top, bottom, left and right and after fifteen minutes it becomes simply boring nonsense because the story does not goes anywhere new.

Suffice it to say, I found the plot confusing, with a lot of back-tracking and unnecessary red-herrings thrown in, and the "scares" are the typical jump-scares that you would expect from this sort of thing.

The seesaw sits atop an empty keg.

It is extremely annoying having to keep the volume control in your hand because every sound in this movie is designed as a cheap thrill to compensate for the lack of story, creativity, direction and acting.

A complete waste of time.

Cliché 1: Girl goes into attic of old house and brings out an item or items and poof!

Though the film was a bit busy with melodrama with my preferring more subtlety than effects, An American Haunting was visually stunning, the actors did well and I did get spooked out.

Second fiddle to Sutherland, she plays it the best she can with intense and covert glances of feeble moroseness.

There are a few brief minutes of boredom, but mostly confusion.

The attack scenes are mostly snicker inducing, and despite falling asleep I had figured out the 'twist' ending way before it even arrived.

It felt very disjointed and the occasional flashbacks did absolutely nothing to serve the story as a whole.

To say that her performance was compelling would be an understatement.

Want to see something historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining...

From the haunting noises, the suspenseful moments, the moving of the blankets, the creaking floors, and each moment in between the lines we are taken in from the beginning.

Why are all so called 'horror' movies the same, this is pretentious crap that has wasted a lot of money that could have been put into something worthwhile.

Visually nice, but drags on in parts in the sense that nothing happens story-wise: ghost arrives, ghost attacks, ghost arrives, ghost attacks.

I was so bored in the theater the entire time...

I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost haunted the Bell family.

I thought it was suspenseful and original.

This movie was a waste of time and money.

There were some surprising moments in this film, but for the most part it was long and drawn out.

I didn't think it was going to be a success, but it was very entertaining and I was very scared as well, because it is very well done.

Also, goofy visual effects such as seemingly random scenes shot in black-and-white scenes and shots of the actors through the eyes of the Bell Witch, itself, are pointless and prove distracting from the movie.

Totally entertaining .

A complete waste of time, and it took itself far too seriously, and fell flat on its face.

The set rattles and shakes, the camera work is not good, the plot is so confusing its like the ramblings of an incoherent fool.

It is a really good film, because the story is so fascinating and you wonder if it is really true.

This is classic horror in the making, I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost or spirit came to the Bell daughter every night.

more like American boring.

All I read about this movie was how good it was going to be, and I saw it and thought it was the worst movie I had ever seen.

OK maybe the movie is a bit confusing but thats the only thing i can think of to lower its rating for me its 10/10 Ignore the bad reviews if u wanna see a thrilling ghost story with many scary scenes who make your hair stand up.

There are some truly exciting moments in this film, and the audience will jump at least a couple of times when the poltergeis unleash their full anger on the family.

After nobody knows how much shock-horror this poorly written film suddenly introduces an unexpected explanation for the horrific spirit visitations on a family of three (one teenage daughter) in a beautifully recreated early nineteenth-century rural American village.

Frightening, disturbing and haunting this movie has caused many to leave the theater in terror.

With its predictable true story label slavishly tagged on to give it some smidgen of credibility.

But generally a very good film, entertaining and definitely a must for all horror fans.

Endless repetition of the same stair shots and misty weirdness, pointless screams, sitting up in bed yelling, Linda Blair scenes, etc does not make a spooky movie.

If you are hoping to see an entertaining scary movie with a deep creepy feel to it, then "An American Haunting" is a good option, unless you have not seen "The Others," which you should go rent and watch instead, unless of course you want to go out to a theatre, in which case you would not do too badly to see "An American Haunting" – Sutherland and Spacek make a good a respectable couple (19th century Tennessee's hick version of an aristocratic family) struggling with inexplicable and seemingly supernatural phenomena.

Its boring...

I saw it with fairly low expectations (always a good thing) and found it to be entertaining.

The film had the right element of suspense, drama, and thrilling moments.

The main problem is towards the end as the plot gets unnecessarily confusing and provides answers to many questions surrounding the actual legend.

It is a tedious history lesson about an unknown entity that terrorized a Tennessee family in the early 1800s and ultimately was blamed for a man's death in the early 1800s.

However, if you like a suspenseful, psychological horror that can have you gripping your armrests a few times, you should check it out at a matinée showing.

I find this movie quite entertaining, with all the ups and downs, its quite a wild ride.

He was quite riveting and viewers are never truly sure of the motivations behind his character.

My friends and I have been talking about this since we left the theater.

After a little bit, the scene switches to the past via a letter that apparently is left to explain why the haunted house is so haunted, a past anachronistic enough in dialog without the perseverance of the aforementioned scare tactics, which within fifteen minutes into the film start literally falling into a perfectly predictable rhythm.

It was a complete waste of my money!!

the same, worn out, totally cliché scare tactics that every other "scary" movie uses were again employed, except this movie seemed to embrace the repetitive triteness of those old methods, as they were repeated ad nauseum.

Thriller and suspenseful horror.

Enjoyed it .

As I've already mentioned, the Bell Witch story is an interesting one and the mystery behind it seems to me to be far more entertaining than the explanation to Betsy's torment presented in An American Haunting.

A lot of other movies i've seen that were period pieces were boring and not always accurate.

This is a hauntingly bad movie featuring donald sutherland and many other wasted talents in this turgid mess about a spirit caused the death of a man, and this is the set in 1820's about a family who has a spirit in the house and spirit seems to follow a girl in the house, yet they put her back to bed like nothing happened, the performances are completely silly, the special effects are terrible, the screenplay is misused in the wrong way and the direction is not very good, We saw much better ghost and other spirit movies like the exorcist and the exorcism of emily rose, here this one is pathetically lost and lame brained, this is one of the most loudest, most pathetic movies in recent years, since alone in the dark.

This movie, with excellent visuals, in depth (but somewhat difficult to comprehend if no one pays attention) storyline, and eye-riveting horror sequences, settled me to the edge of my seat the first time I saw the movie when I to see it the other day.

Wow unexpected (spoiler) .

I'm going to recommend this movie, if for nothing else than for the fact that after being deluged with a never-ending string of bad so-called horror/slasher/suspense-thriller films over the past few years, a truly suspenseful movie has finally emerged.

This is classic horror in the making, I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost or spirit came to the Bell daughter every night.

This uses every cliché of the modern horror movie repeatedly.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

An American Haunting was very scary and suspenseful...

That was a very very extremely boring movie...

It's a touching drama and a riveting psychological thriller……………………….

this movie was only slightly entertaining and that's pretty much all it was.

I found An American Haunting dull and unoriginal.

Possibly one of the worst movies ever made, I'd rather watch 'The Village' .

90% of horror flicks are predictable.

The Exorcist, no message.

Finally, as far as creatively goes, An American Haunting is bland and pedestrian.

Want to see something historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining...

Many of the more "intense" moments are just as laughable.

While the tone, predictable and overwrought it may be, maintains heavily derivative gasps throughout, the ultimate blunder comes with a heavy handed, poorly played plot device that changes the angle and renders much of what has been viewed questionable at best.

The fictional ending, though unexpected and slightly shocking, is not conceived properly.

Thrilling!

It didn't bother me that the story seemed to stray a little from the book, I have read that some people found the story to really bother them, I look at it as folklore, that is what happens with stories told over time, they are up for your own personal interpretation and that is what is exciting to me.

Totally engrossing.

Instead, the flick is largely boring, confusing, and poorly executed.

While possessing no intelligence itself, the film is pretentious enough to leave it's target audience with a smug sense of satisfaction upon having watched it.

Unlike most movies that are "supposed" to be scary, or suspenseful, this one actually pulls it off.

It was more suspenseful like The Ring.

Totally boring.

This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat.

An American Hauntings, I think an American waste of my time is a more appropriate title.

From the beginning to the end it was thrilling and absolutely fascinating.

That being the second half of this movie (the good half) must surely have been lost at some point during post production and thus producers were left only with a sad, incomplete, boring half-movie that made no sense.

You'll need them to stay awake.

Also when the girl herself hears voices in the room and the bed covers are pulled down off her (another cliché) she sits up looks around, then pulls the covers back down and tries to get more SLEEP!!

With all due respect, it seems that some of the past reviewers might be a little slow.

more than half the movie was just watching the ghost torture Betsy every single night which really got boring after a while.

The characters are well written and the tension is being built up to the unexpected climax of the film.

but when I watched it, it was possibly the worst, most drawn out and pointless horror flick I've ever seen.

It was so boring, I found myself preferring to watch my computer's screen-saver instead of this junk.

And, since we're shown, finally, the part the father plays in the attacks on the girl, then how do we make sense of the other events, like the scene where she's dragged up the steps while everyone, including her father, watches.

Where is the story, I couldn't find it, the same jumpy scenes can only be used so many times before the film begins to annoy and bore the audience.

Meanwhile, Bell's daughter Betsy is acting strange and invisible entities are haunting the Bell residence as doors open and close by themselves, people are pushed and dragged around, and of course the entity likes to remove the covers from a sleeping teenage girl and pin her to the mattress (no nudity in unrated version).

There was very little music in the film and the silence made the movie that much more intense.

Courtney Solomon is doing a beautiful job at bringing across the essence of the story, which is fascinating by itself and leaves you with a touch of sadness.

It basically just introduced the plot and was a bunch of waiting and repetitive attempts to scare the audience.

In any case it is a very entertaining film and does give some interesting material to think over on the way home.

On the edge of your seat thriller .

I know this was based on a true story, but there were more pointless than anything I could have ever imagined.

An American Haunting was very scary and had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire film.

Perhaps the first half hour is more entertaining than the rest of the movie is because, after that, its the same over and over again.

Besides failing to scare the bejesus out of me like any average horror flick should, 'An American Haunting' is also boring as hell.

Geez, how cliché can you GET?

It's scary, influential and very entertaining.

A pretty scary and very enjoyable movie to watch.

Sissy Spacek, Donald Sutherland, and James D'Arcy each play deep, compelling, heartfelt characters that will move you long after you've left the theater.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

I was falling asleep thats how boring it is.

I've seen made-for-television movies that were more exciting and better made from a creative standpoint.

There is no build-up of dramatic tension, no identification with the characters, and no storyline worth mentioning.

I found the film to be very creepy and quite entertaining.

This is classic horror in the making, I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost or spirit came to the Bell daughter every night.

Disjointed and ineffectual, the energy put into its production could have been so much better spent by using real history and blending M.

' because this story has for its foundation traditional American mythology it is a fascinating representation of popular morays from 1818.

Somewhat confusing hunted house thriller but still worth watching with the Romanian, the home of the legendary vampire of books and films Dracula, countryside substituting for rural Tennessee giving the film a really eerie and ghostly look.

Expect the Unexpected .

This "American Haunting" is just yet another boring, drab, badly-acted ghost story.

Let's see, The Omen, no message.

No storyline.

Then it resorts to repetitive fright sequences, bizarre activities that may or may not have occurred, and a resolution that paternal rape is the real curse, or witch.

For most of the movie I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next...

I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost haunted the Bell family.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Honest, stunning, superbly acted.

Great suspenseful horror movie.

Seventh: There's a pretty pointless modern day back story that bookends the film.

It's essentially pointless to the whole of the movie.

It was historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining!

The twist is it's actually a rip off of another movie, and an offensive, triggering waste of time.

This might not be a new Exorcist or Poltergeist (this kind of films will never come back), but it's indeed a solid effort to deliver a thrilling experience using today's technology to stage an old Witch tale.

what a waste of time .

Unexpected things happening and definitely entertaining.

Save your money.

Basically this is boring, stupid, badly done and confusing movie.

His character goes through revolutions of character changes that's awkward and contrived to fit a scattered and disorganised screenplay that was trying to fit in as many documented 'accounts' of the Bells as possible.

This movie had all the elements to stand the test of time, it was engaging and creepie and I hope that it inspires more directors to not be afraid and sell out to the recent gore we have been seeing on the big screen.

I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost haunted the Bell family.

Though the novel is an engrossing read, and the film filled with potential, it was sadly squandered in this woefully inept, turgid version with wrongheaded embellishments and over reliance in visual effects.

Suspenseful, With Above Average Acting and Effects .

Though some may find it entertaining, and we did until the plot came out, the legend is much better than the movie, which should have followed the actual account of the Bell Witch.

This movie is totally worth watching.

I did find the revealing ending a little bit disappointing, but the overall story was enjoyable.

Want to see something historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining...

Donald Sutherland, who plays her husband, John Bell, gave an intriguing performance—as was to be expected.

It starts as a series of inconsequential importance, from hallucinations written off as being tired or creaks and moans in the night before becoming full-blown supernatural plagues, all building up to the next encounter to make this more creepy and unexpected.

Although i did find the ending rather disappointing, it seemed a bit too rushed, making it rather confusing how a living girl some how created a ghost, unless a ghost was possessing her due to the father's molesting her?

You see her blanket being pulled off, her writhing around and screaming, dragged around etc. This is a little scary the first time, by the 9th time you see the same door slamming, the same covers being removed, the same everything it has ceased being scary.

There were a lot of people laughing and shaking their heads when the lights went up which would indicate what boring drivel it is.

The scenes where they are trying to make something look scary it fails terribly and this movie was just such a waste of my time!

However, I did think that most of the movie was easy to follow and generally enjoyable to watch, and there were some scenes that really made me jump off my seat.

one of the worst movies of any type that I've seen in a long time.

Chilling and Thrilling .

This sounds like fun to watch, but after the second time it gets a little too repetitive for my, or ANYBODY'S liking.

BEWARE, and for gods sakes don't waste your money on this train wreck!!!!!!!!!

While certain intense moments in "An American Haunting" (nails screeching across the floor, carriages flipping) are brilliantly exciting, their payoff is the result of a well constructed atmosphere in which evil seems ready to spring on you from all sides and at all times.

Wait for cable or something if you have to see it or rent it if you must, but don't waste the time, money or energy of seeing this one at the theater.

This was the worst movie i have ever seen in my life, and it makes me even more mad that this movie is not #1 on IMDb's 100 all-time worst films...

This movie was flawless; it kept me on the edge of my seat.

It starts out scary and the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat.

A truly frightening film should work like a roller coaster, a serene climb heavenward, followed by a 3-G plunge and a loopty-loop, then another slow steady spot, etc. Shock is effective when the audience never sees it coming.

It has been a long time since I have walked out of a movie and been so pleased, such a feeling of satisfaction I felt coming out of this movie.

I found the movie very confusing and slow moving.

Through out my youth in boredom we'd go searching for witchery and the such, usually finding nothing.

Besides entertaining you, An American Haunting will serve as a decent lesson in the devices that make good horror.

Edge of boredom maybe.

The atmosphere is well done and creepy, and all in all this is an entertaining, twisting romp that fans of the suspense genre should applaud.

Aside from the main characters and a few of the more mundane aspects of the haunting, the writers and director chose instead to fill it up with a tedious litany of unimaginative horror movie clichés.

The very moment that Donald Sutherland appeared on screen, I felt as if this was going to be an engaging theatre experience for me.

The resolution of the story was completely unexpected, and the ghost is scary, scary as hell.

Then we go to the credits with the cliché 3 definition of poltergeist and how it appears in the form of an adolescent girl.

It will surprise you here and there with unexpected things.

From the haunting noises, the suspenseful moments, the moving of the blankets, the creaking floors, and each moment in between the lines we are taken in from the beginning.

The solution to the problem proves mundane, and is nothing that we haven't seen before.

yet the brilliant writing and directing of Courtney Solomon had us on the edge of our seats and really told this story to its full potential.

In fact, watch anything else because it really is a waste of money.

Now that he was given the chance to do things his way, he created a truly fascinating and horrifying vision of that particular haunting.

Both movies left me feeling a bit empty because they try so hard to accomplish their respective twists of being a ghost film at the same time as NOT being a ghost film (and in fact being about psychological breakdown).

I would advise anyone who wants to see this to save your money and not see it in the theater.

so slow and painful .

It's all over the place in a disjointed fashion.

As I said before, the story is solid and intriguing.

Whether you believe in the Bell witch or not, this is still an entertaining, well-made horror movie.

The overall story line lacked consistency and was terribly cliché in parts.

The acting was terrible (as in most scary movies), and when I watched the movie I thought I was experiencing déjà vu with all of the repeated and pointless scenes.

In my opinion, it is brilliant, gripping, and, in general, well done.

His one liners are the only moments of levity in what in generally a very tedious affair.

I thought it was going to be scary and blending time periods in a seamless fashion.. instead I got the same images, segments and same special effects looped endlessly in a boring fashion.

htm and see for yourself the facts of this terrifying story and don't waste your time or money seeing An American Haunting.

I was disappointed in how they attempted to frighten you, mostly by having a window shatter at an unexpected moment, or some other loud noise pop out during a quiet scene.

The film does have an unexpected twist that could've been really clever if the film was played out completely differently!

And yet its sub-plot or 'twist' is a let down and makes the previous moments of the film totally pointless and highlights the poor plot and gaps in the scripting.

Eerie, scary, and intense .

Why have they taken so long to come out with this story, it is fascinating and terrifying.

Though it is a little intense to watch some of the strange behavior of the unknown poltergeist, frightful dream sequences, and rather bizarre moments.

I'm not sure if it's just the part she's playing or what, but Spacek looks bored for most of the film; and while Sutherland has never been the liveliest actor, he doesn't look particularly enthused with his part either.

Whether it's the hyperactive camera-work (director Courtney Solomon seems to be attempting to channel Sam Raimi but fails miserably, his camera tricks totally at odds with the story), the derivative visuals, the Disney-like music, the bland characters or the idiotic storyline, this film fails in every respect.

It was one of the most intriguing stories I have seen on film and prompted me to do some searching into the story.

An American Haunting was very scary and suspenseful...

I found the storyline to be mostly convoluted and uninteresting, and often confusing with the frequent use of "dream sequences" and "visions" that may or may not have been real...

The plot about a wealthy family whose heretofore peaceful and opulent abode is suddenly beset by violent and frightening poltergeist activity in which the toothsome teenage daughter (lovely Rosanna Arquette lookalike Rachel Hurd-Wood) is the primary target of an angry and potent unrestful evil spirit certainly sounds promising, but alas said plot is severely undermined by director/co-screenwriter Courtney Solomon's dreadfully crude, hyperactive and increasingly tiresome shoot-the-fireworks style.

This is classic horror in the making, I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost or spirit haunted the Bell family.

If not, and you like something a bit more intense or frightening...

Very powerful story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Why have they taken so long to come out with this story, it is fascinating and terrifying.

Ghost stories rarely make for interesting horror viewing anyway, but Courtney Solomon's film appears to be going out of its way to be as pointless, disjointed and uninspiring as possible.

Unexpected and Intelligent Twist .

Maybe if the sound effects of the slaps weren't overused in other films, my laughter would'be been kept down to a dull roar.

scary but pointless...

As it is, I left the theater disappointed and angry.

Be prepared for the unthinkable and unexpected.

An American Haunting was very scary and suspenseful...

The really frightening moments were when she was dragged across the floor by an invisible force, hair yanked, and suspension in mid-air.

Instead the story was turned from fascinating folklore into a story of suspenseful thriller and female empowerment which brings up so many questions such as why are all haunted victims little girls.

Over all, its uneventful and trite.

The film dragged out so much that it felt like it was a three hour film instead of one that was only eighty minutes.

i went to see this to with my husband and he shares the same anger and confusion for it like me.

This also makes the pacing seem incredibly quick and rapid, as this never once loses steam once the activity starts to affect them with the ghost visiting her in the bedroom or the school encounter on the swing, leaving it all the more enjoyable.

Rachel Hurd-Wood had a few nice scenes but she was kind of bland.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

Trust me don't waste your time seeing it.

It is historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining.

This is one of those films that as I left the theater, conversation turned to questions like "Didn't anyone read the script?

And then I got bored.

If you are thinking about watching this movie, please do yourself a favor and save the money.

It is historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining.

It was supposed to contain intense terror.

We're bored as hell!

90% of horror flicks are predictable.

Repetitive, generic, and most of all mediocre.

Don't waste your time...

I think this movie is worth watching.

This is classic horror in the making, I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost or spirit came to the Bell daughter every night.

one of the worst movie I've even seen (thanks to the lame lame lame ending), and honestly, for me to actually say this, is quite an accomplishment.

It is historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining.

Save your money .

Why have they taken so long to come out with this story, it is fascinating and terrifying.

It has great acting, great visual effects, and is really enjoyable to watch, if you like being scared, and trust me, you will be!

Boring.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

The characters are well written and the tension is being built up to the unexpected climax of the film.. A perfect 9 to me, including visual fx, editing, photography (Adrian Biddle), and plot development.

When the girl was being dragged down the stairs was one of the more scarier moments.

It's somewhat impressive at first but gets really boring when it's done again and again.

Disjointed, contradictory and very much not worth wasting your time on.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

It's a very dull film that tries to construct a load of "jump scares" together or presenting countless sequences as a dream which can become very irritating.

Decent Movie, but dragged at times .

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

This is classic horror in the making, I was on the edge of my seat as this ghost or spirit came to the Bell daughter every night.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

The reveal is problematic and a little bit confusing.

The girl, Rachel Hurd-Wood, looks stunning.

Was this movie entertaining?

Sissy Spacek and Rachel Hurd-Wood bring a fascinating dynamic to this film which helps recount the story.

The twist in "An American Haunting" was unexpected and intelligent .............................

The movie was suspenseful, and creepy.

As some one who does not regularly watch horror films, I find this film to have been a waste of my time and I was not scared at all.

It was a slow progression throughout the movie & the ending was a lie!!

An American Haunting was very scary and had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire film.

Boring is not a good thing for an allegedly scary movie.

" I'm stunned that he was able to survive the wreckage of that film to release another (there must be a 5-year statute of limitations on nearly unwatchable drek).

The camera work is vapid, and uninspired, often falling back on the tired, cliché "chase cam.

It is historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining.

At first I thought it was kind of creepy, but by the third round of these same events it becomes quite boring.

The movie started off slow and for the most part reminded me of something out of the goosebumps series.

I found the story very intriguing and the flashback gimmick added some layers to the film.

I enjoyed it as a precisely crafted exercise in story-telling through film; not as a shocking tale of terror or a deep examination of anything.

Somehow what was once scary becomes a tad boring.

There was really no plot except for the last 5 minutes of it which was the twist.

It was one of the best horror movies i've watched and I really enjoyed it.

Don't waste your time.

Worst Movie Award .

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

It did end very quickly and some people could have been confused because it was very fast paced.

From the haunting noises, the suspenseful moments, the moving of the blankets, the creaking floors, and each moment in between the lines we are taken in from the beginning.

It just makes the Bell Witch legend look even dumber, and it was a huge waste of the film's time.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

(Candles burn down quickly, lights go out, doors slam, girl's bedroom covers get pulled off of her slowly, she gets dragged around, floorboards creak.

~ The most entertaining AND frightening thing about this horrible movie was watching Sutherland's towering, Gandalf-looking character lurch about with his long, flowing set of white hair.

Second, while the movie begins well (scenic and spooky setting, good cast (Sissy Spacek, Don Sutherland, James D'Arcy) and a well-established mood), it degenerates by mid-film into the standard Hollywood fare of special effects overkill, choppy, disjointed dream sequences, and complete unravelling of the plot.

A great film to get scared and makes you leave the theater with a feeling of responsibility.

So far, it's dragged on for about an hour and ten minutes, and "drag" is putting it lightly.

and pointless...

It wasn't scary, there were too many predictable scary bits where the actors hear a noise, they go see nothing there and then BANG something scary happens after, luring them into a false sense of security and that crap, which is the oldest trick in the book.

The story was interesting, but am still trying to figure out how a great story with talented actors could end up in such a waste of time.

It becomes repetitive, boring and sad.

The awesomely exciting twist is obvious to anyone who has seen the much better, funnier and scarier Twin peaks from about ten minutes into the plot and the prologue/epilogue contemporary scenes are just stupid.

Second, there's just too many things going on at the same time..it gets extremely confusing.

Pointless?

I'd even go as far as to say I was getting a little bored towards the end, thinking is anything different gonna happen.

I enjoyed it enough to give it a ten star rating which I normally wouldn't do for most American horror movies.

The modern-day storyline is completely irrelevant and pointless.

Besides the poorly thought out plot and loose interpretation of the actual haunting, the film is down right boring, I caught my mind wandering in almost every scene.

Some people have complained that the movie is boring because they show the same scenes over and over of the young girl screaming, and having nightmares.

It's just so freaking contrived!!!

All in all, I found this to a a well done and enjoyable movie.

I was so angry when I left the theater I could have spit.

and it was absolutely stunning!

Those cliché "horror" scenes couldn't make me jump in elementary, and they definitely don't make me now.

I'm sure you would have these questions and more for everyone involved if you waste your time on this.

The film has plenty of flaws but overall I found it entertaining.

So the balance is knocked out and what results is boredom.

I expected this movie to be another movie like "Emily Rose" where the director tries to compensate for a slow plot with pretty choreography.

The acting is very good, the effects are OK, and the camera work it's not that much of your typical "here comes a scary moment", and another good thing is that the ending, at least to me, was a bit of unexpected.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

A truly talented composer would have captured the flavor of the era, as well as created suspense instead of alternating currents of boredom and bombast.

The acting was poor at best; the characters seemed rather dull.

a big waste of time.

In D&D, that meant he focused (wrongly) on all the clichés of fantasy, going so over the top as to repel even stolid fans, and forgot about the mystery and grandeur fantasy can give even cliché.

Don't Waste Your Money .

Worst Movie I've Seen This Year .

excorsting, boring.

Pretty exciting ghost-horror film.

The payoff in this film was a complete waste of my money.

From the performances (shame on you Mr. Sutherland and shame on you, Mrs. Spacek), to the super-confusing, ridiculous plot, to the tiresome, amateurish direction this American crapfest is a lesson in how to completely screw up.

Dreadfully boring, non-scary and just plain stupid .

This movie provides one theory about the Bell legend, some people would object to the conclusions made but as a movie it was entertaining.

This films plot is very very unoriginal and cliché.

A few good things in this movie keep us on the edge and makes us wait for the best part.

Night Shaymalan movie, capture our interest only to go with the most fascinating ending.

This conclusion is not only completely inaccurate from the original accounts of the Bell Witch, but its revelation is poorly carried out and confusing to say the least.

The movie even contradicts itself and in the end just becomes a confusing mess.

Gaye Brown, who played the angry female who supposedly cursed the Bells, was chillingly compelling, despite the fact that her role was really small.

Yet another boring ghost story.

The score should be taught as a bad example in film schools -- every cliché in the book, from screeching violins, through pounding tympani, to LOUD electronic whomps and clangs.

The characters were particularly flat and dull and no more based on true events than ET.

That carries over into the later half where this is able to include some really spectacular set- pieces as the second bedroom encounter is a long, drawn-out and protracted torture sequence all done in a straightforward style that leaves all the dragging around and slapping thrown in.

What a bore.

Contrived.

There's lots of CGI here, shots of Betsy being dragged across her room, lifted up & slapped around with ridiculously overdone sound effects set the tone for the entire style of the film as director Solomon has no idea how to build suspense or tension & he has never heard of the word subtle either.

Donald Sutherland does an acceptable job, but he really does just seem bored to death the entire time.

I loved the suspense and the pace of the film was very intense.

Low and behold, An American Haunting has haunted its way across the valleys and plains to our neck of the woods before the land of the free and I must say that I enjoyed it thoroughly.

An American Haunting is typical, formulaic ghost tripe.

lets give much respect to them for keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Stepping hard on the heels of last years Exorcism of Emily Rose, Haunting fails to offer the same kind of genuine fright and fear that it could have through its banal finale.

this is not your average ghost story, with all the twist, turns, and unexpected shots it will leave you in wonder through out the entire movie.

The writers, who had up to this point written a fairly creepy and cliché free movie, decided to insert one of those damn twist endings.

I didn't think of it as one of the greatest pictures out there, but it was entertaining and totally worth the money!

Want to see something historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining...

I found this movie to be both entertaining and thrilling.

The scenes of Betsy(Rachel Hurd-Wood) having night terrors that turned to evocation's really portrayed the insanity, confusion, pain and anger that rape can cause.

The original Bell Witch tale is truly intriguing and actually quite terrifying.

It is historical, chilling, thrilling, and entertaining.

Warning: Hints that may count as Spoilers follow: While the end of the movie may raise some contentious issues surrounding Betsy and John Bell (Hurd-Wood and Sutherland)—while it may mean that Betsy Bell is something of a superhuman with divine powers—it is still compelling as an account of the events that took place in that small town in Tennessee so many years ago.

I sat down to watch it with friends at a Halloween party and actually fell asleep during it.

An American Haunting was pretty entertaining and I liked the way Courtney Solomon intertwined the two main themes of the film.

Courtney Solomon is doing a beautiful job at bringing across the essence of the story, which is fascinating by itself and leaves you with a touch of sadness.

I don't know how many times we see doors slam shut, blankets pulled to the floor, windows thrown open for no reason, seeing things that aren't there, it's like every abominable horror cliché is thrown at you five or more times before you notice that nothing has really happened.

Sissy Spacek and Rachel Hurd-Wood bring a fascinating dynamic to this film which helps recount the story.

90% of horror flicks are predictable.

Rachel's screams became so repetitive it almost warranted a call-and-response chorus.

The costumes were enjoyable as well, and so were the visual effects.

Fascinating .

I wont say much about this movie, except that it is a waste of time and money.

most of the younger actors sucked, the story was muddled, repetitive, and didn't advance in any engaging way whatsoever.

It has great acting, great visual effects, and is really enjoyable to watch, if you like being scared, and trust me, you will be!

I rented the DVD last night and really enjoyed it.

Regardless of the true/phony discussion, fact remains that "An American Haunting" is an average – at best – thriller with far too many dull sequences and disappointingly weak horror aspects.

The scary moments are very predictable, and even then they take too long to come.

If you like movies with a lot of unexpected happenings then this is a movie you should see and don't dwell on whether it was the dad or the ghost.

Other films which attempt to do so dive so deep into absurdity that they lose their connection with reality, and degrade to brief interludes of "dumb" comic relief to keep folks from falling asleep.

Most of the suspense, though, is destroyed by the absolutely atrocious editing, which is, at once, frustrating, annoying, and pointless.

Save your money and watch The Exorcist on video.

A slow ghost story with a dubious ending.

It's scary, influential and very entertaining.

Betsy was the intriguing central character played by Rachel Hurd-Wood.

Very suspenseful and chilling.

the plot is thin and pointless and tries to hard and by the end of the film i couldn't care less what happened to that stupid family.

Don't waste your time with MI3, since we already know what's happening in that film.

It seems to me these reviews were just a waste of time for the critics and they really didn't pay attention to the story within the story.

This movie has an unexpected ending that's all.

An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film.

Why have they taken so long to come out with this story, it is fascinating and terrifying.

Not the best, but I enjoyed it a lot.

tedious .

It was definitely brilliant, gripping, and memorable.

A complete waste of time.

Going down the same back roads as High Tension and Fight Club, this psychological twist ending plagues the film to a sense of confusion.

most of the things left in were the most predictable theories, and left out were the things that make the bell witch haunting impressive and different from other hauntings.

Save your money.

1818 girl being dragged up her stairs by the poltergeist.

Its really dull.

Boring and Scareless .

The few jumpy scenes it tried to include were so annoyingly predictable that it was impossible to be scared.

Unexpected things happening and definitely entertaining.

Then there's cliché 2: 1818 witch lady curses him.

I think what made this movie enjoyable for me was the story line that intrigued and enticed right until the truth is discovered.

This movie has some fast editing shock effects and loud crashes and screams but thats about it,other than that its a very stupid waste of time and money.

The beginning was kind of slow and when John Bell was in court and the woman said she was going to make him regret what he had done ruined the entire film.

It is a fast paced film which will definitely bring you a lot of joy.

This is a thoroughly underwhelming film which tries to give us consistent shivers down our back but instead inspires boredom and resentment.

I went to this movie expecting to be frightened out of my wits and I left the theater very disappointed.

Fascinating hearsays, great trailers, appealing group of actors, mixed reviews .

From the haunting noises, the suspenseful moments, the moving of the blankets, the creaking floors, and each moment in between the lines we are taken in from the beginning.

What about Rachel Hurd-Wood, she takes on a huge role for such a young and delicate person, which is fascinating by itself.

I thought it was very well acted and a quality film worth watching.

AAH is a major disappointment and a complete waste of time for the excellent actors and us, a wannabee excellent audience for this interesting story given the mallplex treatment for uninformed teens only.

I loved the suspense and the pace of the film was very intense.

This movie was a waste of time!!!!

I knew the story of the bell witch before seeing this movie (and when i say movie in this context i mean confusing random images thrown together for a profit) and i have to say this was a VERY loose translation.

Ghost in Empty Theatres will rejoice .

I believe was supposed to be a surprise ending, but any viewer who has managed to stay awake long enough to get to this point will see it coming from a mile away.

The imagery is nice, and the art direction is well-done, but the horror scenes are just dismally boring and over-played.

IN FACT, he took the criticisms from the original screening to heart, re-cut the movie and created something new, exciting and twisted.

One big bore.. .
